Without a Doubt, Summer School 2021 Going All Out

By:  Christine Harper-Director of Communications

A year ago, there was doubt.  Doubt of what a pandemic was going to do to the traditional classroom.  There was no summer school.  School started in August with mask mandates, social distancing, and limitations on activities.  More doubt.  Was this going to be the “new normal?”

As the school year progressed and the pandemic cases soared, there was doubt.  Would we make it to Christmas vacation?  Would we come back from Christmas vacation?  Will we finish the school year?  Will we get to have summer school?

Well, we did, and without a doubt, Summer School 2021 is in full swing and going strong.  With summer school enrollment the highest it has been in many years (1188 total), without a doubt, our educators were determined to give the students an amazing experience.  And this first week has been phenomenal.

As I visited with building staff, I was blown away at the activities and options students have while they are in summer school.  While all schools are focusing on academics in the morning, the afternoons are filled with some non-traditional learning.  MMS has a fishing class and a swimming class, along with a bike stunt show and a trip to the Cinema in coming weeks.  Eugene Field (grades 3-5) is offering a cooking class, STEM projects, a travel class, two foreign languages (Japanese and Spanish), a Vet Clinic, and a video game class.  At Hawthorne (grades K-2), they are doing fun things in Art, Music, and PE, and have several themed days planned through the month.  They include Best Friends Day (Dress like twins), National Flip Flop Day (wear your flip flops), and Flag Day (wear red, white, and blue).  They will also have Reptileman and a Petting Zoo for students to enjoy.

Mexico High School is offering Health, PE, Art, Personal Finance, Drivers Ed, and Credit Recovery in an effort to give students opportunities to stay on course to graduate with the required credits.

MMS teacher, Chaz Baker, had this to say.  “I’ve enjoyed the smaller classes and a more relaxed environment.  For our students, summer school is a great place to continue to strengthen their good learning habits for the school year.”

“I enjoy getting to try different things and experiencing something new, like cooking class,” said 8th grader Emmie Batsell.

“Summer school is a positive experience for students because it not only provides continued academic support, it also allows them to socialize with their peers,” said Hawthorne teacher Rebecca Blair.

Without a doubt, from 15 buses running daily to cafeteria and custodial crew taking care of lunch and the buildings, Mexico Public Schools is pulling off a remarkable Summer School 2021.
