Changes in Food Service for the 2022-2023 School Year
By: Joyce Fenner, Food Service Director

The last few years have been such a challenge for everyone. There were many changes taking place in every aspect of life. School food service was no exception. Menus changed, meal times changed, serving locations and methods of distribution changed. There were supply chain interruptions, which resulted in last minute menu changes. Staff changed and policies changed. What did not change? Kids continued to have access to meals.

The last two school years, all students were able to receive breakfast and lunch free of charge due to federal COVID waivers. Well, once again, things are changing. The waivers ended as of June 30, 2022. This means that when school starts back in August, families with high school students will need to complete a free/reduced meal application in order to receive those benefits. Eighth grade and younger will remain free due to the district’s continued participation in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). Mexico 59 has been participating in CEP for the last several years. This program allows qualified schools to offer free meals without the need of qualifying with applications. The individual schools qualify based on numbers of directly certified students due to SNAP, TANF, Foster, etc.

The free/reduced applications will be available early July on the district website (mexicoschools.net), under “For Parents & Students,” and then click on “Food Service” page.  Paper applications will also be available in all district buildings or by mail by calling the food service office at 581-3773.
