MHS Academic Team is Ready to Roll
By: Dale Schenewerk

The Mexico High School Academic Team ended the 2021-2022 season on a high, finishing in the Top 50 on their first trip to the Pace National Scholastic Competition in Chicago.  As they start the 2022-2023 season, the journey continues.

While the team will look different, notably losing senior captain Zack McWilliams and 4-year varsity starter Sydney Moeller, the team has lofty goals.

At the first practice of the season, the team decided on three goals for the season:

1) Win the NCMC Conference tournament for the first time.

2) Go to the State Tournament (have to win the District Tournament and the     Quarterfinal matchup to do this)

3) Get back to Chicago (Pace NSC) and have a higher-ranking finish.

This season's journey picks up where last season's regular season ended... here at home.  This year, the Mexico High School Academic Team is hosting its first fall tournament, the Bulldog Fall Fiesta.  This tournament currently features 20 varsity-level teams competing in the varsity tournament and 12 novice teams (JV) playing in a separate JV tournament.  Hosting the tournament gives players' families and friends a chance to see the new team in action.  The tournament's proceeds will help fund this year's trek to the national tournament in Chicago.

This year's varsity roster includes the nation's top-scoring freshman last year, Camden Williams, senior captain Jamison Jeffries, senior Declan Gleeson, juniors Christian Frederickson, and Liam Hoyle, and sophomores Carter Blackburn and Dylan Reid.  Behind them, this year's MHS team features unparalleled depth thanks to a ton of incoming freshmen and new sophomores.

Support your National Top 50 MHS Academic Team at their home tournament Saturday, October 22nd at Mexico High School.  The first round is scheduled to begin at 8:50 AM with championship games tentatively scheduled for 4:30 - 5:00 PM.
