When the Chamber of Commerce announced last spring that Mexico, Missouri was ranked the #1 affordable small town to live in by, I thought, “Of course, it is!!”
Our community, of just over 11,000 people, is amazing. Low unemployment rates and affordable housing are not the only reasons to live in Mexico. Our community is extremely supportive of our schools. Currently, there may not be a bigger symbol of such support as the new Middle School storm shelter and gym. Our taxpayers continue to prove how dedicated they are to providing the best facilities possible for the children of Mexico.

The project that started in January and finished this November was one of the most fascinating building projects to be built in Mexico. Many of you remember the large pieces of concrete wall that were hoisted to their new home by the enormous 100-foot crane. That wall now supports the even bigger double t’s that have became the shelter’s roof. Altogether the project contains approximately 5,283,250 pounds of concrete, which provides a place for our students to be safe in the event of a tornado, and now allows Mexico Middle school to have assemblies, concerts, and educational activities that fit our entire school.

While the outside is impressive, the inside is breathtaking. The design of the building screams Bulldog pride! The walls are gray and white accented with red and gray soundboards and an 8’ x 24’ foot Bulldog banner. The wood floor, with a Mexico Bulldog marking center court, gives it a classic gym feel, and the red bleachers are begging for Bulldog fans to come cheer on their athletes. It is truly a sight to see.

On behalf of Mexico Middle School’s faculty and staff and the Mexico Public Schools, I would like to invite you our building dedication Dec. 4, at 5:15 p.m. The gym will be open at 4:30 p.m. for public viewing and the ceremony will begin at 5:15 p.m, followed by our 7th and 8th-grade girl’s basketball game at 6 p.m. against Hannibal Middle School. Making Minds Stronger is our mission at Mexico Middle School, and our new building serves as a testament to the partnership between our building and our community. A million thank yous would not be enough to thank each of you who put the children of our community first but is a start. Mexico: thank you times a million!
