May 15 - Family, friends, and faculty packed Hawthorne Heights on Monday evening, May 13, to honor and celebrate the 194 graduates who walked across the stage, the Bulldog Class of 2019. The MHS Band, under the direction of Mr. Josh Yancey, welcomed the graduates into the stadium with Pomp and Circumstance. They then played The Star Spangled Banner and Selections from the Greatest Showman.

“Educating our youth is a community effort,” opened MHS Principal, Brad Ellebracht. Mr. Ellebracht shared the total from the Friday morning Senior Scholarship Assembly, where students earned $901,779.49 in monetary awards.

As students walked across the stage to receive diplomas, seniors donned a variety of cords and pins to signify their academic accomplishments and student involvement. Amongst these were:

Kylie Yeast and Ansel Herrera-Garcia were chosen by the graduation committee of students and teachers to offer speeches for the attending audience. They shared memories from the past as well as offered words of wisdom for the future. “Be bold and reach for the stars. Remember your red and gray roots,” Herrera-Garcia closed.

Five students earned valedictorian honors and also offered speeches to their classmates: Thomas Calaluce, Helena Fairchild, Sarah Kasubke, Elayna Samm, and Cole Whalen. Grace Wortmann was recognized as the class Salutatorian.

For his commitment to the Mexico community and his outstanding accomplishments to the Mexico School District, Mr. Kevin Freeman was recognized as the 2019 Honorary Graduate.
