Happy New Year from McMillan Early Learning Center!
By: Anne Billington, Principal at MELC

Each day brings fresh opportunities and the chance for innovation and progression, but we often need something as significant as a new year to really push the boundaries in education, business innovation, boldness, drive and advancement.

The arrival of a new year is a motivational time for the school and business community, with business owners, educators, entrepreneurs and self-starters, determined to move their school or business up a gear in early January. This optimistic and bright time of the year is perfect for putting last year’s “failings” or concerns behind us, driving ambition and achieving success.

At McMillan Early Learning Center, we just spent the Professional Development day recharging and developing new goals for the second semester. We were thoroughly impressed with the amount of participation and eagerness to start off the new year in such a positive and energetic manner.

Our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) team presented to the staff on ways to help students be successful in the classroom. The team consists of Misty Werkmeister, the school counselor and PBIS coach, Layne Ray, our Pre-K coach, and Rebecca Blair, our behavioral interventionist. The presentation was very informative, thought-provoking and engaging, and teachers got strategies to help them and their students be successful.

Our team spent four hours in the morning brainstorming, role playing, sharing out, etc. We created SMART goals for the new year regarding school-wide behaviors. As we continue to create goals, gather behavioral data, and work individually or in small groups with students, we are able to create better action plans to help all students.

We want to thank our awesome staff members, the community, the board of education, our superintendent, and all other stakeholders who serve as positive role models for our students. The respect, the responsibility, and the safety that you model in this community is just what we need to help create a better tomorrow. We are One School One Community. Best wishes for a safe and healthy 2023!
