Sometimes it is important to just take a minute and realize how lucky we are to live in such a great community.  This time of year, this is easy for us at Mexico High School because we are in the middle of scholarship season. The people of Mexico open their hearts (and their wallets) every spring to support our kids as they go on to pursue post-secondary education and training.

We are very grateful that this year that our community will offer approximately 108  local scholarships. These range from $100 to $5000. Some of them are given to one student while others are handed out to several college bound seniors.  Scholarships in Mexico are given out by civic groups, business, families and foundations as well as other organizations.

In some cases the scholarships go to purchasing books or supplies for a class and many of these scholarships are what will make it possible for our kids to pursue their dreams.  Every year, it is amazing how many different students get supported in this way.

Of course, the local money isn’t the only financial support our students will be awarded at our

Senior Awards Assembly on May 18.  Colleges and organizations from around the region and the nation will be awarding our graduates scholarships for academic achievement, athletic skill or specific interests or backgrounds.  All told, over the last few years, we have recognized $700,000 - $800,000 in scholarships annually at the awards event that is held every year on the Friday prior to graduation.

Local scholarship committees, families and civic groups are getting ready to sort through their piece of over 2,150 applications we received for local scholarships, from our senior class.  We want to thank everyone that is involved in this process. It is an incredible benefit to our students and their families and we appreciate your time and dedication to our students and our community.

Our staff, at school, put a lot of energy into this process as well and it is truly a labor of love.  Rather it is proofreading and offering suggestion on essays, writing letters of recommendation, going through the scholarship “book” and helping a kid decide which ones to apply for; we work at supporting our students and helping them appreciate how lucky they are to live in a place where their community cares so much.

If you would be interested in supporting our students with a scholarship, we would love to help you get started on the process.  Just call the school guidance office and we can post the scholarship and make our students aware. The number for the office is (573) 581-4296 ext. 3010.
