Team is Not Just About the Game
By: Jessica Stephens, MHS Class of 2023

At Mexico High School, there are so many different teams that a student could be a part of; I happen to be on the volleyball team. Being on a team has many additional benefits that most people probably don't consider. Yes, we practice together daily and have games 2-3 times a week, but being on a team means way more than that. It is a group of people that come together for a common interest. We are all working towards winning and being the best team possible. Every single person has a role, and we need every single person to be successful. A group of people come together with one thing in common and leave being tight-knit.

Building relationships off the court builds chemistry on the court, so everyone plays together. You also have to build trust outside of playing the game in order to trust each other on the court. It's not just an on-the-court relationship; it is seeing each other in the halls and laughing, and the bus rides to away games that make the team much more special. We are each other's biggest cheerleaders and supporters, no matter if we win or lose. That is what it means to be on a team. And one day, we will all look back and be thankful that we were part of a team.

Successfully being a part of a team is something that will be useful after high school.  Learning to work with other people to accomplish a goal is something students will use their whole lives, whether it’s with family or at work or wherever.  Building relationships that have trust is definitely important to being successful as an adult.

Life is about being a good teammate.  It’s about people knowing they can count on me and I know I can count on them.  It’s about working together to achieve a goal.  It’s about encouraging one another to be our best, individually and together.  Team is NOT just about the game.  It is so much more and it’s rewarding.
