Fifth graders selected for Presidential Awards

May 5, 2025 - Mexico Public Schools proudly honored 16 outstanding fifth-grade students during the President’s Award for Educational Excellence Ceremony, held on May 5 at Mexico High School Emmons Hall. Students from both Hawthorne Elementary and Eugene Field Elementary were recognized for their exceptional academic achievement, strong character, and commitment to learning.
The evening opened with a warm welcome from Hawthorne Elementary Principal Katie Lehnen, who emphasized the significance of the celebration.
“Today is about more than just recognition — it's about honoring the effort, perseverance, and positive spirit that our students, staff, and families bring to our school community every single day,” Lehnen shared.
Students receiving the President’s Award for Educational Excellence met high standards, including maintaining “meets” or “exceeds” marks in English Language Arts and Math on their report cards, earning proficient or advanced scores on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests, and demonstrating leadership, integrity, and a strong work ethic in the classroom.
Assistant Superintendent Julie Lower delivered the keynote address, applauding the students’ dedication while recognizing the vital role that teachers and families play in their success.
“This award is more than a certificate,” Lower said. “It’s a celebration of hard work, consistency, and character. It takes curiosity, courage, and perseverance—and none of it happens alone. We’re so proud of what these students have achieved and excited to see what lies ahead for them.”
Lower also expressed gratitude to the district’s dedicated staff and supportive families, noting that strong partnerships between home and school are essential in helping students thrive.
