Hamm selected as Missouri Poet Laureate

October 1, 2025 – Eugene Field Elementary librarian Justin Hamm, has been selected by Governor Mike Kehoe as the next Poet Laureate of Missouri.
The Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for poetry throughout the state, presenting readings, leading workshops, and engaging communities in digital and social media in the art of poetry. Hamm’s appointment starts today and runs through September 2027.
Principal Scott Daly shared, “Everyone at Eugene Field is extremely proud of Mr. Hamm. I believe people will see the same passion and enthusiasm he brings every day to the students of our school, and he will continue to create excitement for poetry.”
Hamm describes the appointment as a once-in-a-lifetime honor that recognizes both his work as a writer and his commitment to sharing poetry with others.
In a note to staff, Hamm shared, “The joy I get from being around our students, and from sharing this work with such a dedicated group of teachers, is a huge part of why I’m able to be a poet at all. Whatever I accomplish in this role, it grows directly out of what we do together here each day.”
Agriculture Education teacher Christina Terry, a former English student of Hamm’s, recalled, “He showed us the power of the classics. I never enjoyed a classic novel until we read 'The Great Gatsby' together as a class! He always pushed us to our full potential and proved what true passion for writing looks like. I always triple-check my grammar because of Mr. Hamm!”
Mexico Public Schools congratulates Justin Hamm on this incredible honor and looks forward to celebrating this achievement. Governor Kehoe is expected to visit Mexico for a public ceremony to officially sign Hamm’s oath of office. Details will be shared once the event is scheduled.
