Snack Smart: HAW students learn healthy habits in the kitchen

March 16, 2026 – Hawthorne Elementary students in grades 3–5 are learning how to make smart food choices and stay safe in the kitchen through Healthy Snacks–Kitchen Safety, an after-school program offered in partnership with the Audrain County Health Department.
During each session, ACHD representatives bring ingredients and resources while guiding students through the steps of preparing a healthy snack. Along the way, they share nutrition tips and facts to help students understand why balanced choices matter. Students also receive a take-home menu so they can recreate the recipes with their families.
“The after-school class is a great opportunity for students to learn about nutrition and be able to make a healthy snack they can re-create at home,” shared Tad Dobyns, PRI site coordinator.
The second half of each class focuses on kitchen safety. Recent lessons covered safe use of ovens, microwaves, and toasters, helping students build confidence and awareness while cooking at home.
The program includes four classes during the second semester, with pre-registered students and an average of 10–20 participants per session. A session was also offered during the first semester.
Thank you to ACHD representatives Jodi Chrisman and Greta Hopke for partnering with Hawthorne to make this hands-on learning experience possible.
