A “Dynamic Duo” Recognized: Eugene Field educators named state award finalists

April 22, 2026 – It was a morning full of surprises at Eugene Field Elementary School as two first-grade educators were recognized as finalists for statewide honors, each nominated by the other.
Student teacher Taylor DeMint and mentor teacher Haley Schafer were both named among 15 finalists for their respective awards through the Missouri Milken Educators, in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Schafer nominated DeMint for the Missouri Teacher Leader of Tomorrow Award, while DeMint, unaware of Schafer’s nomination, submitted her mentor for the Excellence in Clinical Mentorship Award.
The recognition was revealed as a surprise, with district leadership, including superintendents, Eugene Field administrators, and district staff, on hand to celebrate the moment. Melissa Fike, a Milken Educator and math coordinator from Columbia Public Schools, presented the awards alongside representatives from the University of Missouri College of Education & Human Development.
During the presentation, Fike described the pair as a “dynamic duo,” highlighting the strong partnership they’ve built in the classroom.
In her nomination, Schafer praised DeMint’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to students, “Taylor is an exceptionally dedicated and hardworking student teacher who consistently demonstrates professionalism, initiative, and genuine care for her students. She builds meaningful relationships and creates a positive, supportive learning environment. She goes above and beyond, always looking for ways to grow and improve.”
Schafer also reflected on DeMint’s journey, noting her growth from a Mexico High school cadet teacher to a confident and capable educator.
“Her perseverance, passion, and deep commitment to teaching are evident in everything she does. Taylor is a natural leader who models kindness, responsibility, and enthusiasm. She truly represents the promise and excellence this award is meant to recognize.”
DeMint will be celebrated at an upcoming recognition event in June.
Schafer was nominated as an outstanding mentor for the mentorship award in recognition of her guidance, support, and dedication to local education. Together, their shared recognition speaks to the power of mentorship, collaboration, and the lasting impact educators have on one another and on the students they serve.
The Missouri Teacher Leaders of Tomorrow (MTLT) program, launched in 2022 by the Missouri Milken Educators, recognizes outstanding new educators completing student teaching in Missouri. Honorees are selected for their promise and dedication to the profession and receive a year of coaching, one-on-one mentorship from National Milken Educator Award recipients, and access to a statewide network of accomplished educators.
