Schafer named as finalist for state award

May 8, 2026 – Congratulations to Haley Schafer for being selected as a finalist for the Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year, an honor presented through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
Mrs. Schafer teaches first grade at Eugene Field. Her journey with Mexico Public Schools began in 2016 as a playground aide. From recess duty to reading groups, she’s grown right alongside the students she serves. Haley is also a Bulldog alum!
According to DESE, this recognition reflects “the deep respect and admiration of those who nominated you” and is extended only to educators who are considered exemplary in their profession. Regional honorees move on to compete for the opportunity to become Missouri Teacher of the Year.
To move forward as a finalist, Mrs. Schafer will submit an application for the 2026–27 Regional Teacher of the Year program, an opportunity reserved for educators who have demonstrated outstanding commitment, excellence, and impact in the classroom.
“Mrs. Schafer represents the very best of what it means to be an educator,” shared Mrs. Julie Lower-Welch, Assistant Superintendent. “Her passion for students, commitment to learning, and ability to build meaningful relationships make a lasting difference every single day. We are incredibly proud to see her recognized at the state level.”
As part of the application process, Schafer will complete a competitive application that includes essays, a professional resume, and administrator recommendations before a June submission deadline. Regional Teacher of the Year applicants will also have the opportunity to connect with current and former Missouri Teachers of the Year during an informational session in Jefferson City.
While nominations for the award remain anonymous, DESE noted that those who nominated Schafer believe she is “an exemplary educator worthy of this honor.”
Mexico Public Schools congratulates Haley Schafer on this incredible recognition and wishes her the very best as she continues through the Regional Teacher of the Year process!
