Helping students learn on their feet

June 22, 2026 – Mexico Public Schools is pleased to announce that Mexico Middle School has received a $7,000 grant from the Allen P. and Josephine B. Green Foundation to support the "Moving Minds" project.
The grant was written by Special Services Director Melissa Diemeke and Mexico Middle School teacher Chaz Baker. Funding will be used to purchase standing desks for classrooms throughout the middle school, providing students with additional options for movement and engagement during the school day.
While traditional desks work well for many students, others find it challenging to remain seated for extended periods. Standing desks offer a structured alternative that allows students to stay focused, participate in learning, and channel their energy productively.
Research has shown that opportunities for movement can positively impact student engagement and focus. By giving students the option to stand while they learn, teachers can help reduce off-task behaviors and create learning environments that better meet the needs of all students.
The grant is expected to impact all 28 classrooms at Mexico Middle School, with an estimated one to three students per classroom using the standing desks each day. This means approximately 28 to 84 students daily will benefit from increased flexibility and choice in their learning environment.
The project reflects the district’s commitment to meeting students where they are and providing tools that support academic success for all learners.
Mexico Public Schools extends its appreciation to the Allen P. and Josephine B. Green Foundation for investing in innovative classroom solutions that help students thrive.
