September 25, 2026 – Our elementary students celebrated reading and Bulldog pride during the 2nd Annual Literacy & Football Night on Friday, September 18. When schools and families work together, our students are the ones who benefit most!

K-5 students and their families gathered at the Mexico High School softball field for an evening of books, hands-on literacy activities, and family fun. A great turnout of families enjoyed face painting, popcorn and activities that encouraged students and parents to read, learn and work together.

Every student who attended received a free new football-themed book to take home, and families could also choose from a large selection of additional free books. The goal was simple: put books into students’ hands while giving families fun and practical ways to support literacy beyond the school day.

The evening also offered a little extra Bulldog spirit. K–5 students joined the Mexico High School band and cheerleaders to form an entrance tunnel and welcome the Bulldogs onto the football field. Families also had an opportunity to enjoy Military Night and Friday night football.

Literacy Night is also part of a larger effort to strengthen the connection between school and home. As a Title I district, Mexico Public Schools receives federal funding to provide additional resources and learning opportunities that help students succeed. Title I supports areas such as additional reading and math instruction, intervention programs, instructional materials, professional development and family engagement.

Family involvement is an important part of Title I because learning doesn’t stop when students leave the classroom. Events like Literacy Night give families opportunities to learn alongside their children, connect with their schools and take home resources they can continue using together. 

Thank you to our families, staff, and everyone who helped make the evening possible. The event was planned by the MPS Title Teachers: Peggy Klick, Stephanie Wieberg, Alex Stuckenschnieder, and Danielle Louder, along with Instructional Coach Carey Knipfel and Assistant Superintendent Julie Welch.
