HCC Student Spotlight: Olivia Knoepflein, Senior from North Callaway, Cosmetology

Olivia Knoepflien works in cosmetology class.

Nominated by Cosmetology Instructor, Cameron Christoffer

Olivia Knoepflein comes to school always prepared for what we are doing. She is ready to take on any challenge behind the chair in the salon. She also recruits clients to come in and receive services from her. Liv is a student that has so much on her plate. She is active with sports and works many hours at a job each week as a shift leader meaning she is responsible for other staff doing their job. This gal is thinking about continuing her education in the beauty industry. She has been looking at becoming an esthetician too. Liv is determined and when she sets her mind to it she goes after it. I always encourage students to set goals and go after them. She is always asking questions about things in our industry on how she can better herself. I think she will go far in this industry and I can't wait to see her bloom.

Career in Focus: Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Program at Hart Career Center gives students an opportunity to let their talents shine and also teaches students how to run a cosmetology business. The students in the class get to work and run a working salon. Each student gets real customers from the community of Mexico and beyond. After earning a cosmetology license, students can apply for employment in salons and barber shops. Many of the seniors are applying for jobs at different hair salons and shops around the community right now, as the end of the school year is approaching.
Sophia Pratt from Fulton works in cosmetology class.
Sophie Pratt, a senior at Fulton High School says, “outside of hair, students get to learn how to do pedicures and manicures.” She also says, "students can learn how to do facials." Currently students are working toward taking the Missouri Cosmetology State Board licenses in a written and hands on portion. This is one of the few programs at Hart Career Center that will accept graduated students as an adult enrollment to complete the program in one year. Adult applications are available on our website.
Riley Kelleher, a junior at North Callaway says, “This class gives students social skills through clientele work.” So, this class not only provides students with jobs after graduation, but also gives students skills that they will use in the future, whether they decide to be a cosmetologist or not. So, if you’re looking for a class that will expand your knowledge and even develop your social skills, then Cosmetology is the perfect program for you! Applications are being accepted now with a deadline of March 2, 2026. See your high school counselor to apply now!
